The department is delegated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to regulate and monitor the operation of all commercial hazardous waste treatment and disposal facilities, defined as facilities which receive for disposal only, or for treatment and disposal, hazardous wastes that are not generated onsite and to which facility a fee is paid for such treatment of disposal (Ala. Code, 22-30-6 and 22-30-11 [1975]). This series consists of regulatory records created/maintained in the Hazardous Waste Branch, Land Division, for the Chemical Waste Management (CWM) facility, the only commercial hazardous waste treatment/disposal facility located in Alabama. These files include, but are not limited to, permit applications, periodic ground water monitoring reports, financial assurance documents, maps, facility drawings and specifications, memoranda, and correspondence. Parts of these files were created by the Department of Public Health, 1978-1982 under the provisions of the Hazardous Wastes Management Act of 1978.
